Painting dogs is one of my great passions because I believe dogs are pure of heart.  That does not mean that dogs don't have issues and attitudes; those are the individual qualities that make them great subjects for paintings!  I prefer to paint dogs up close and personal because personalities seem to emerge through expressive eyes, eyebrows and ears, and many dogs actually smile.  I work from photos because even the best-behaved dog should not have to endure an artist!  If you are unsure about the quality of your photos, I may able to work with them digitally to enhance the quality.

People feel that my paintings of their dogs express personality or attitude.  I begin by considering personality and appreciate clients' input to help me learn a bit about the dog.   Composition is then explored sometimes using digital images that can be shared with the client before finalizing a commission.  The goal of each work is to create a likeness or a mood as well as a piece with artistic integrity.  It is also helpful to know if the dog is still with you physically or remaining with you in spirit.

In general, my paintings on square canvas or wood are more contemporary in feel, and oils on standard rectangles are a bit more traditional, but media, size and shape can be customized to suit your needs. 


Commission Information 

I enjoy painting all kinds of dogs and love the challenge of a breed I haven't painted previously.  Many clients commission individual portraits but I am happy to paint groups as well.  All paintings are done on 1 1/2 inch gallery wrapped canvas painted on the edges so that no framing is required, but may be framed if desired.  Frames are not included.    Prices below represent portraits of individual dogs. Additional dogs may be added for a cost of $100 each.  If you choose to include multiple dogs, please consider a larger canvas to maintain the impact of the piece.  The prices listed are guidelines; custom sizes and larger sizes are available.  The cost is the same for oil or acrylic.  If you would like me to meet with you and your dog, which is always great fun, travel expenses may apply depending on distance. I can work from your digital or film photos; if you are local I would be happy to photograph your dog for an additional fee.
